Ilene “IS” Schuster

“We are the creators of our own world.”

Ilene “IS”Schuster (1948-2016) was among the earliest artists to adopt computer imaging technology in the creation of visual art. A renown pioneer in the field of digital art, Schuster (then, Ilene Goss) graduated in 1971 from Wayne State University in Detroit with a Masters in Fine Art. While a postgraduate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the late 1970s, Schuster recognized the computer’s “potential at forming our future and shaping our culture.” Beginning with accesss to the world’s most advanced digital paint system at MIT, Shuster remained on the forefront of digital developments for artists. She was invited as a guest professional (University of Michigan’s Aerospace Department, The Environmental Research Institute of Michigan) and contributed to advances in computer graphics processors and imaging tools throughout her career.

Schuster was a catalyst at the intersection of science, art and digital technology, demonstrating the potential of digital media and expanding its boundaries. Schuster was ALSO an arts educator, a tireless advocate of public arts legislation and urban arts councils, a sought-after speaker, awards panelist, journalist, and a curator of emerging electronic media.

Schuster was recognized with numerous grants, honors and awards. Her work has been featured in solo and juried exhibitions in the U. S. and abroad, and is in the permanent collections of: Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY; International Center of Photography, NY; Danforth Art Museum, MA; Wayne State University, Michigan; Southwest Michigan University; The Environmental Research Institute of Michigan; Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan; Tyler School ofArt, Rome, Italy; Detroit Institute of Art, City of Detroit; Shariah Art Museum, Dubai; Tian Xi Yuan, Taiwan, among others, as well as private collections.

Other Artists in this Collection

The ART of IS — Pioneering Digital Art from the Estate of Ilene Schuster includes exceptional works by Ilene Schuster, and from her personal collection by friends and colleagues: Ed Emshwiller, Sonia Sheridan, Aldo Tambellini, Sue Hirtzel, and David Becker—who have distinguished themselves as visual artists, educators, and pioneers of emerging technologies.

In the 1970s and 1980s, acceptance of digital media faced considerable resistance from the art world. In response to this bias, Schuster and her contemporaries, Sonia Sheridan and Sue Hirtzel applied disciplined practices from their fine arts backgrounds to gain recognition as serious digital artists. Ed Emshwiller, a prolific science-fiction illustrator, invented new techniques in computer-assisted special effects and experimental film-making. Aldo Tambellini, was a painter, sculptor and poet who synthesized film, video, music and live performance into a new and highly-influential form of multi-media art.
